Kitchen Broom
The kitchen broom has a wide, approximate 16 inch, sweep sewn flat. It sweeps clean a large open area with ease. A kitchen broom’s sweep has two layers of broom corn with shoulders to help form the flat shape. The wooden handles are made from several different species of hard woods. Each handle is unique. I search our wooded areas, fence lines and creek banks for small weed trees, dead-fall or drift wood that is rich in character. I use strong nylon twine to plait the 100% natural broom corn onto the handle. The length of plaiting on each broom varies due to the nature of the broom corn. Natural fibered twine is sewn into the sweep. I use cotton and waxed linen to sew the sweep flat. Generally each broom is sewn 3 times to firmly hold the shape of the broom’s sweep. Kitchen Broom – Approximate length is 42″ to 48″. Ornate Kitchen Broom – Broom handle is more fanciful. Ornate objects may be added or used as a unique handle. A one-of-a-kind wooden handle may contain buck rubs, wrapped vines, burls or imperfections that are accented in the wood. |
